Master Books: Living Art Lessons

Over the years I’ve found it hard to get to art lessons because I’m focusing so hard on making sure the kids are completing their reading, writing, math, history, and science lessons.

But the fine arts are an important part of a classical education and liberal arts education!

The fine arts help kids develop aesthetic standards. They also help kids develop ordo amoris or the right order of affections and an appreciation for what is good, beautiful, and right.

And if that’s not enough, the fine arts also help kids develop their fine motor skills!

Since the fine arts are so important, the question becomes, how do we fit fine art into the homeschool week?

The best solution I’ve found is to use an easy, open-and-go curriculum.

An open-and-go curriculum allows me to grab the materials and teach my kids without spending hours of extra time on lesson planning or research.

This is great since I would rather spend the time hanging out with my family instead of glued to the computer searching for information on artists, art concepts, and fun projects.

Living Art Lessons is a delightful introduction to art designed to be used over a school year with kids between the 4th and 6th grades.

The lessons are so well done that you can use the curriculum slowly with younger kids or more quickly with older kids as an intro to art.

In short, it’s a curriculum you can adapt to use with your entire family.

The Living Art Lessons curriculum includes two parts: a textbook and an artist journal.

The textbook is a colorful book that is filled with lessons and projects to complete with your children. The Artist Journal includes a detailed lesson plan, art supply list, and activity pages for the kids.

As kids work through the curriculum, they learn about:

The short weekly lessons in the textbook include bright, colorful pictures and clear explanations. I love how short the lessons are since they’re easy to fit into a busy schedule and the perfect length for short attention spans!

Each concept includes information about an artist and includes several fun art projects.

For instance, kids learn about Picasso and then get to make their own “Picasso” pet!
