While reading, writing, and arithmetic are critical skills for children, there’s more to a well-rounded liberal arts education than just the three R’s.
Kids need to be exposed to history. They should have a chance to study geography, draw pictures, and perform science experiments. And we should also introduce music appreciation to our students.
Except how do we find the time, especially in a large family, to add music appreciation to our busy schedules without losing our minds? I found it hard enough to add one more subject, especially when I needed to add three more curricula in order to teach my elementary kids, middle school students, and high school teenagers.
I’m tired just thinking about it!

It’s a great way to help families like mine to spend more time together. I love being able to put kids of all ages around my dining room table to study, learn, and discuss.
The best part about this curriculum is that you don’t do some things with your 2nd graders and other things with your twelfth graders. Instead, you just leave out the assignments that are too difficult for young kids and let them run off and play.
And yes, your high school teenager can earn high school credits if they complete most of the listed assignments.
The course is divided into 54 lessons that are designed to be completed over two years, at a pace of a lesson a week.

The course begins with ancient times and ends with modern music making it easy to connect the music with various historical eras. I wish we had the book last year since we covered a large swath of history that included the Medieval, Renaissance, and Classical time periods.

I loved the QR codes throughout the book that allows us to hear the music as well as read about it.
The teacher’s guide is broken down into 54 lessons. We cover one lesson a week for two years.
The Start Here page in the teacher’s guide gives much-needed advice on adapting the curriculum for younger students.
