How to Teach Art the Easy Way

I’ve struggled to teach art in my homeschooling.

Artists may not realize it, but teaching art is intimidating. Especially when you specialize in stick figures, not masterpieces like I do! But my kids love art. The kids color, they draw, and they paint. I needed an easy way to teach art to my kids!

Step-by-Step Drawing Class

In addition, Alisha offers a step-by-step drawing class for the K-2 crowd. The pace is adjusted for short attention spans as the videos are only 5-10 minutes long. The kids learn how to draw birds, butterflies, bumblebees, dinosaurs, flowers, and even airplanes!

My little 1st and 2nd graders have spent many happy hours working through these drawing lessons!

Mixed Media Workshops are also available. In these workshops, kids use a variety of media to create owls, valentines, rabbits, and more. Children can even learn how to create pet portraits in mixed media!

And Alisha’s coming out with a whole set of lessons for older children and teenagers. The first of these classes, Drawing 101, is going live on March 19th. It will be followed each month by Watercolors 101 on April 16th, Acrylics (& Oils) 101 on May 21, and Pastels 101 on June 18th.

I suppose you could purchase each course in The Art School separately for $72, but why? The membership includes them all!

Adapting the Supply List

Although I’ll be perfectly honest, we’ve done a few lessons without the right supplies.

I substitute supplies like crazy when needed. For instance, we needed hodge-podge, acrylic paints, and old paper. Instead of the hodge-podge, I handed my child a glue stick. I handed her tempera paints instead of acrylic paints. Instead of old paper from books and sheets of music, I handed her construction paper.

And you know what? My little girl was happy as a clam working through the lesson. She cut. She pasted. And she painted. And she drew. In the end, she created a beautiful owl for her portfolio.

You don’t need to have the perfect supplies to get your kids started with these art classes. Simply substitute the supplies you do have.

Best of all these classes are done online and simple to do in the house with Alisha doing all the teaching.

So I no longer struggle to teach art in my house. Now I pull out my computer, lay art supplies all over the table, and let Alisha teach my children. The kids love the classes. They love learning new techniques. And they love creating masterpieces to hang around the house.
