Math in the Early Grades

Mathematics in the early grades often consists of counting, adding, subtracting, and more counting, adding, and subtracting. Occasionally shapes, time, and measurement are touched, but the majority of time is spent counting, adding, and subtracting.

It’s not that kids don’t need to know how to count, add, and subtract, but there’s more to math than that.

Much more.

There’s measurement, geometric shapes, and puzzle-solving.

Now we can just toss a ruler and shapes at the kids and let them play for a short time. Let’s face it. Our little ones will quickly get bored and wander off.

This is why Kendall Hunt is offering Project M2: Mentoring Young Mathematicians, an engaging grade K math curriculum for young children.

Engaging Grade K Math Curriculum

Project M2: Mentoring Young Mathematicians is an exploratory math program that teaching basic math skills while introducing children to advanced concepts in geometry and measuring.

Children are challenged to think, explore, and play by helping the Frogonauts or frog astronauts.

In Exploring Shapes in Space, the first book of the series, Farley will be joining his cousin in space. However, before he leaves, he has a lot to learn and the children need to help him master information such as 3-dimensional shapes.

Children are challenged to learn the names of 3-dimensional shapes, to build 3-dimensional shapes from 2-dimensional pictures. These shapes use regular blocks, so I pulled out my ancient set of blocks for my youngest children to explore.

Farley needed to be able to build structures on the space station, so he wondered if these shapes would be good for building. The children helped Farley by following pictures to build 3-dimensional structures.

Other activities had the children designing their own space station floor plan with blocks or creating control panels with tangrams.

Journals are provided for children to write their discoveries down. I chose to skip all writing assignments for my children. If your child also prefers not to write, you could easily copy down the answers from dictation rather than simply skipping the journal.

Sizing Up the Lily Pad Space Station: Measuring with the Frogonauts

Sizing Up the Lily Pad Space Station has the children help Freeda, Farley’s cousin, measure new additions to the Lily Pad Space Station. It’s a great way to introduce kindergarteners to length, area, and volume.

This unit begins with the children creating space shuttles to launch to the station. Students are asked to predict out how far their shuttle will travel and shown how to measure that distance.

Once the space shuttles have launched and landed at the station, more measurements are needed. The Frogonauts need an exercise area that’s 6 feet long. But wait a minute. Are we talking about frogs’ feet or kids’ feet?

Of course, the frogs also need to eat on the space station. They need some freeze-dried flies to be shipped. It turns out that linking cubes are the same size as the freeze-dried fly containers. How many containers will the shipping compartment hold?

Project M2: Mentoring Young Mathematicians uses hands-on learning activities and an engaging storyline to teach kindergarten math. It goes beyond the normal kindergarten math curricula, challenging children to critically think by posing problems for the children to predict outcomes and find solutions.
