Morning time is an awesome way to start the day. With the right morning time resources your family too can enjoy this restful study time in your own home.
What’s Morning Time?
Morning time is when the family gathers to enjoy poetry and a read-aloud together. History and science topics can be lightly touched upon. The family chants Latin declensions and conjugations together. Fine art is introduced.
Preschoolers and early elementary children are able to complete most of their schooling during this time. They hear history, listen to science, memorize poetry, and chant Latin with their older siblings. Later they can touch on reading, copywork, and arithmetic with Mom.
For older children, this times gives them a review of history topics they’re covering. A chance to internalize the Latin chants. Enjoy a read aloud with their younger siblings.
This group time together keeps the family schooling in harmony, giving a unity to the homeschool. The kids can then take off and do their individual studies or play.
Morning Time Resources
The resources I use for our morning time gathering changes constantly. Here are a few of my favorites.
- The Harp and Laurel Wreath: Poetry and Dictation for the Classical Curriculum has a wonderful collection of poetry. You can use it for dictation, simply read and enjoy, or memorize the poems. They’re also divided by stages.
- Living Memory is a wonderful book full of ideas for memory work. Ideas include memorizing bits of Latin, mythology, Bible, grammar, math, literature, and much more! It’s a book that spans all three stages of classical education.
- The Story of the World series is one everyone in the family enjoys listening to. It gives the youngest children an excellent background. It gives the oldest children a refresher and quick review about the history topic we’re studying this week.
- Science to be honest I’m trying to work this one out. One child is studying chemistry, another biology, and a third physics. The youngest two, well, they’re preschool. My thought is add nature study to our morning time with a weekly long nature hike. If you have any ideas, just comment below!
